Is Your Unit’s Information Up-to-Date on BeAScout.org?

BeAScout.org is an important tool for prospective scouting families and scouts moving into the area to find units near them.  A recent review of Narcoossee units found that many have outdated information, but this can easily be corrected by the Unit Key 3 (Cubmaster/Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, Chartered Org Rep)!

To change your unit’s BeAScout information, a Key 3 registered leader in your unit must log in to my.scouting.org, and enter Organization Manager under the menu.  Click “Unit Pin” to change the information.  Make sure your “Additional Unit Information” description includes your unit’s meeting day, time, and location, and that “Appear on BeAScout” is selected.

More information on the Pin tool and process is available here: https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2023/07/19/nows-a-good-time-to-make-sure-your-beascout-pin-is-up-to-date/

Scouting for Food 2024

The 2024 Scouting for Food (SFF) service project is ramping up and your unit’s participation and efforts are key to making this important service project successful. Scouting for Food is the nation’s largest single-day food drive and an opportunity for Scouts to make a significant impact in our community by helping local families.  Last year, Central Florida Council was able to provide more than 50,000 meals through Second Harvest Foodbank! Our District goal this year is to collect 55,000 pounds of food.

The unit coverage map for the Narcoossee District is online at
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1zTtUz1uf_qHA5mqY9kW5aSGHcuZ8979u&usp=sharingPlease email me with any coverage area changes.  If your unit is not shown, please let me know the area you would like to cover.

Important Dates:
— TodayRegister your unit.  This can be done at
https://forms.gle/zPgrBsLGw58ntjv99
— October Roundtable:  The SFF bags are back and will be provided to the units
— November 2:  Your unit distributes SFF bags in your assigned area.  Also consider asking your chartered organization, local businesses, apartment complexes, etc. if your unit could place a food collection box at their location.
— November 9:  Your unit collects SFF donations in your assigned area and deliver/report donations at a district collection site.  Locations for collection sites are on the map and will be at Second Harvest Food Bank and STU Import/Export (* aka The Popcorn Warehouse *). Volunteers will be needed at the collection sites.

Thank you for supporting Scouting for Food and your commitment to serving our youth and community. If you have questions, please contact Narcoossee SFF Chair Kelli Chou at
 ScoutAggie@gmail.com.

Attention Scouts BSA Troops!
Time to Register for ‘Meet the Troops’ Night at October RT

Scouts BSA Troops are invited to host a table at ‘Meet Your Local Troops’ night at the October Round Table Meeting to promote your unit to participating Webelos and AOL families. This event grew out of a desire from Webelos/AOL scouts nearing ‘crossover’ time to have a way to interact with a wider range of Scouts BSA troops in the area beyond their traditional feeder troop(s). October RT is on 10/17/24 at Center Pointe Church, setup starting at 6:30pm, with the open Meet and Greet starting around 7:15pm.

Please register your Scouts BSA Troop to host a table by emailing Mike Hockman at mikehockman1@gmail.com

Scout Craft

Looking for a quick and easy craft idea for a recruitment event or meeting?

Scouts can use a leather strip and pony beads to make an Oath Bracelet symbolizing elements of the Scout Oath.

Or try this easy-to-make Pool Noodle Pom-Pom Shooter, which is sure to be a scout favorite!

Check out Amy Lester’s instructions for making both of these crafts.

Looking Ahead…
Narcoossee District Calendar Changes Winter/Spring 2025

Narcoossee District will NOT be hosting Webelos Woods or a Scouts BSA Spring Camporee in winter/spring 2025, as the resources typically allocated for these events have been allocated to the Central Florida Council Camporee scheduled February 7-9, 2025. All units—Cub Packs, Scouts BSA Troops, Venturing Crews, Sea Scout Ships—are strongly encouraging to make plans to attend the Council Camporee!

Linked here is the most up-to-date version of the Narcoossee District Calendar May 2024 – May 2025, that reflects the most up-to-date listing of major district and council events.

Narcoossee District Roundtable
Next Roundtable: Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 7:00pm

We would like to invite you to the Narcoossee District Roundtable, which will typically be held on the third Thursday of every month at Centre Point Community Church (9580 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, FL 32825). Doors open for gathering at 6:30pm, and opening flag is at 7pm. Roundtable is a great way for Scout leaders to share ideas, network and get information about our Council and District. Ideally, every unit should try to have at least one leader attend every month so that you can take what you learn to your Units!

This month’s September Roundtable will be held on Thursday, 9/19/24. Program breakout groups will be offered for Cub Scout leaders and Scouts BSA/Venturing/Sea Scout leaders.

Looking ahead, October Round Table on 10/17 will be ‘Meet the Troops’ night. Troops who wish to host a table should email Mike Hockman. Cub packs are encouraged to make plans for their AOL scouts to come out.

November Round Table on 11/21 will be “Culture Night. “ Pick a country to represent and share that culture and maybe some food in the spirt of Thanksgiving.

If you have any announcements or messages you would like to present or convey at Roundtable, please contact Mike Hockman, Roundtable Chair, at mikehockman1@gmail.com

EVENT DATE HAS CHANGED – NOW SEPT 14th

Safety Day with the Osceola Sheriff’s Department
Hosted by Narcoossee District’s Pack 125

Cub Scout Pack 125 is hosting a Safety Day event with the Osceola Sherriff’s Department on September 14th, 11am – 3pm. This event is taking place concurrently with a charity car show. The Car Show and the Safety Day activities are free, and food will be available for purchase. Last year, the Scouts in attendance were able to sit in the Police Helicopter, sit on their motorcycles, climb in their riot tanks, fire trucks, ambulances, and even police boats. It was very cool for the kids. This year there will be stations for requirement, as listed in the flyer.

Individual registration is not required, but Pack Leaders are requested to RSVP an estimated number of attendees by August 24th. Parents and siblings are welcome to join, though the Scouts will be the ones participating in the activities. The event will cover a range of topics suitable for all ranks from Tigers to AOLs, in addition to the exhibits on display. Scouts are requested to attend in their Class A uniforms.

Please direct pack RSVP and any questions to the event coordinator, Elise Fordham, at tiger87@gmail.com

Advancement Reminders for Life Scouts

Stan Richards and Theresa Martinez are leading the Narcoossee District Eagle Advancement Team. If you have Eagle Advancement questions or requests, you have the option to contact either one of them. However, generally speaking, Stan is taking the lead for units geographically located in Orange County, and Theresa is taking the lead for units geographically located in Osceola County. You can contact Stan Richards at scouterstan@gmail.com and Theresa Martinez at osceoladvancementchair@gmail.com.

Please note the following information for Life scouts working on their Eagle Rank:

1. The Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook was last updated in February 2023. Please make sure you are using the 2023A version when you submit your workbook for district review. The 2023A version of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook PDF can be downloaded from the National website at:
https://www.scouting.org/programs/scouts-bsa/advancement-and-awards/eagle-scout-workbook/

2. Life scouts who are ready for their Eagle Project Workbook review and District approvals have the option of personally meeting with a District Advancement team member by appointment. The Life Scout can still opt to submit and receive feedback electronically, if preferred. But in some cases, a short in-person meeting will still be needed for signatures.

3. Dr. Phillips Charities has established a matching grant fund at the Central Florida Council to which Eagle Scout candidates may apply for partial assistance to fund their Eagle Scout Service project. Only projects located in Orange, Osceola & Seminole counties will be considered for approval. For more information and application: https://www.cflscouting.org/dr-phillips-charities-eagle-service-project-grant-application/

 4. Eagle Boards of Review (EBOR) will be held by appointment at a location coordinated by the District. The Eagle Scout Candidate should contact Stan Richards or Theresa Martinez for further guidance on how to proceed, which may or may not entail the Troops obtaining their own representatives for their EBOR.
