The District Award of Merit is the highest award that a District can bestow on one of its volunteers.
ANY registered adult leader can be nominated for the District Award of Merit. Among the common misconceptions about the District Award of Merit is that only long-time scout leaders who are active as District or Council level volunteers can receive this prestigious award. In fact, more often than not, the leaders selected for this award are UNIT LEVEL volunteers who have done an outstanding job serving the youth in their own Packs, Troops, Teams and Crews for a number of years.
The OPERATIVE WORD is NOMINATED – in order for a volunteer to receive the District Award of Merit, they must be nominated by someone who knows of their dedication. The nomination process requires a little bit of work, but the joy you’ll receive if your nominee is recognized is worth the small amount of time and effort.
Please, please, if you know of a dedicated scouter in YOUR unit who has not already received a District Award of Merit (see recent recipients listed below) and should be recognized with this high honor, please click on the link above to download the nomination form. Please also invite parents and other leaders in your unit to submit their own nomination or write a letter of endorsement to support your nomination.
The next step is to fill out the form to the best of your ability. DO NOT ask your nominee to provide you with the requested information – we want our recipients to be completely surprised when they learn that they have been selected for this recognition. Information can be obtained from your nominee’s family members or close friends or other members of your unit. If you cannot obtain all of the requested information, that’s okay. Just write out a short statement telling why you feel your nominee deserves this awesome recognition and turn in the nomination form by the April 1st deadline.

The BSA Council Alumnus of the Year Award is the Scouting Alumni Association’s highest council recognition. The award was established to recognize alumni of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) who, over a sustained period of time, have used the skills and values they learned through their association with Scouting to make significant and long-lasting contributions to their local communities through their careers, avocations, and Scouting.
A BSA alumnus includes anyone positively and personally impacted by the BSA—former Scouts, family members of Scouts past and present, community leaders, and the millions of Americans who benefit from Scouting in their communities every day.
